INFLUENCE OF LIGHT

Plant growth and development, such as production of leaves, stems, roots, and floral organs is a result of primary metabolic processes. By products of photosynthesis are shuttled throughout the plant and utilized in developing tissues. However, there are several other processes in plants such as coloration, warding off predators and infection, promoting pollination and symbiotic relationships, and defense against environmental conditions such as light and temperature. This is what we refer to as secondary metabolism. When these processes come into play, resources are diverted away from the primary metabolism (growth) and used to generate various attributes crucial to crop quality from a human consumption standpoint.

BROAD SPECTRUM VS NARROW SPECTRUM

Horticulture lighting technologies have improved dramatically over the past century, but manipulation of light spectrum is a fairly new concept. Since plants tend to absorb red and blue light most strongly, other wavelengths have been regarded as unnecessary for plant growth and development. As LED technology progressed, the ability to provide individual spectra did as well, and pink/purple light fixtures flooded the horticulture lighting market. Regardless of this influx of products, research on plant lighting continued to explore the many interactions plants have with light and eventually began to discourage the idea that plants only needed two individual spectra for optimal growth. While there is still much discrepancy over the primary function of light in the 550 nm to 600 nm range as well as in the far-red and ultraviolet wavebands, research has shown many functions and even benefits of incorporating these spectra. In order to help you understand how plants perceive light, this article delves into the many known receptors and pigments plants use to sense and respond to their environment.

How To Compare Grow Lights

As a refresher, PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) is a region of the electromagnetic spectrum (400 to 700 nm) that promotes photosynthesis. PPF (Photosynthetic Photon Flux) is a critical metric that tells us how much PAR a light-source emits. PPF does not measure PAR at a specific location (e.g. your crop canopy), but it tells you how many photons within the PAR region are coming out of the light-source every second. PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density) measures the amount of photons within the PAR region at a specific location (e.g. the amount of light delivered to your canopy) every second. If you have a PAR meter, it is reporting PPFD (μmol/m2/s) measurements. You must understand the differences in these metrics before you can compare various horticulture lighting systems. Many manufacturers realize this can be a confusing topic, so it is very easy for companies to mislead potential customers with exaggerated marketing claims, misleading information, and by showing a limited set of (or using blatantly wrong) metrics.
